A Table Designed to Be Experienced
The Volcanic Rest center table marks an important step in d’Almeida’s evolution as an artist. Unlike earlier tables developed from specific requests, this piece was created independently, with the future collector already in mind. The intention was not simply to create a functional table, but to explore how a piece of natural material could become an experience to be discovered.
Ancient olive wood forms the foundation, carefully prepared and refined while preserving its irregular character. Different stones were introduced into its natural cavities, including a volcanic stone from Terceira Island surrounded by an explosion of colour. Transparent resin holds and complements these elements, while selected glossy surfaces contrast with areas of exposed, finely finished wood.
The result invites touch: the transition from wood to resin to protruding stone creates a changing tactile experience, while the natural scent of olive wood remains part of the encounter. Even the unusual cut on one side became an opportunity for a discreet holder for a phone or other small objects. The custom matte-black steel structure follows the furthest points of the organic form, completing a piece designed not only to be seen, but to be lived with.
