Suspended Origins
A Different Way to Preserve the Wood
Suspended Origins was created from a thin slice of olive wood that d’Almeida wanted to preserve rather than force into a form it was never meant to take. Unlike other pieces where naturally broken wood was later opened further by hand, this section had never broken, and its lightness suggested another possibility: suspension. The wood was therefore set into a turned Kambala support and suspended within the frame, creating a changing sense of depth as the viewer moves around it. The centre of the slice presented another challenge, as part of the original wood was naturally deteriorated and had to be removed. Rather than hiding this loss, d’Almeida transformed it into a central feature: a deep, tapering recess ending in a luminous point, visually connected to the flowing blue and green sparkling rivers behind it. The result is an artwork where preservation, intervention and movement come together, allowing the natural wood to remain the focus while appearing to float within an open, reflective space.
