The first holm oak

Rooted Time was the first artwork in which d’Almeida worked with holm oak. The material presented a new challenge: it is particularly dense, hard and heavy compared with the woods he had previously worked with.

Eleven pieces, reconstructed

The clock began as a single large slice of holm oak. Through d’Almeida’s Reconstruction Technique, it was separated into 11 individual pieces and then reassembled. The original outline of the tree was deliberately retained, allowing the natural form to remain visible after reconstruction.

A steel structure behind the wood

The exceptional weight of the reconstructed wood led d’Almeida to develop a large steel ring on the reverse. The ring captures all 11 pieces while also supporting the clock. More importantly, it was designed to protect the reconstruction over time: if the wood naturally moves, the steel structure helps prevent the individual pieces from separating.

A monumental step in the clock series

Rooted Time was created as a culmination of d’Almeida’s exploration of clocks, deliberately moving away from the smaller scale of his previous timepieces. The intention was to create a much larger and more imposing artwork while retaining the function of a clock.

A clock marked minute by minute

Every minute is individually marked around the face. The hour markers are deliberately different in scale and texture, with sparkling decorative elements that distinguish them from the regular minute markings.

The mountain relief

The front incorporates a sculpted mountain-like form with different sparkling elements, creating a distinctive sense of depth. The artist’s logo was intentionally integrated into this composition, making his identity part of the artwork itself.
