Mirrored Fragments

Where Fragmentation Meets Reflection

Created from two rounds of Acacia melanoxylon, commonly known as Australian Blackwood, this wall artwork began with a simple desire to give a noble material a new life. The wood, connected to the historic fortifications of Valença in northern Portugal, was discovered in the mountains, where it might eventually have been used as firewood. Rather than imposing an identical pattern on the timber, d’Almeida allowed the wood to respond naturally, letting its own structure determine how it cracked. One round separated into 34 fragments, while the other divided into only two sections. Placed one above the other, they create the impression of a reflection without becoming perfectly symmetrical. Sparkling resin rivers flow between and through the fragments, extending the sense of movement and connection. With its black mirror-like surface and no frame, the artwork appears to continue beyond its physical limits.
