Low Magesty
A Shape Worth Saving
Low Majesty began with a particular piece of olive wood whose natural shape immediately suggested something more. From the trunk of an olive tree with well over a century of history, the wood had been destined for firewood, yet its unusual outline and intricate growth rings offered d’Almeida another possibility. Some of the patterns seem to form imaginary figures or scenes, with different viewers finding different shapes within them. Rather than imposing a new form on the wood, d’Almeida chose to work with what was already there, creating a smaller, low sculpture table with three sculpted legs that follow the character of the wood. The result is both sculpture and functional object, preserving the tactile presence and natural aroma of the oiled olive wood while introducing the contrasting depth and brilliance of black bio-based resin.
