Where the Wood Found Its Heart

This small wall clock began with a piece of pine whose natural shape already suggested the outline of a heart. Unlike the more irregular forms often found in olive wood, pine tends to develop a strongly circular structure, with its growth rings following rounded patterns. Yet, towards the outer edges of this particular piece, the shape began to change. d’Almeida saw the possibility of a heart and decided to push that natural suggestion further, completing the form with layers of epoxy resin in transparent and darker tones. At the lower point, shells, stones and glitter become part of the resin composition. The clock hands follow the direction of the wood grain rather than the exact centre of the heart. Even one hand extends slightly beyond the expected area. The result is a small, simple and deliberately imperfect reflection on love: not everything in love is perfectly centred
