Expanding Explosion - Part I

Where the Rivers Begin

Rescued from a pile of ancient olive wood destined to be burned for heating, this piece began with a material that could easily have disappeared into fire. Instead, d’Almeida chose to give it another life. The original slice was divided into 14 separate pieces and carefully repositioned, creating a striking sense of depth and allowing the spaces between them to become part of the artwork. At the centre, a spiral form reminiscent of a volcano becomes the starting point for sparkling rivers that emerge between the wood and flow independently towards the surrounding areas. Against them, the untouched black resin acts almost like a mirror, reflecting the space around the artwork and constantly changing its appearance. This is the first piece of a trilogy that remains unfinished, leaving its continuation — and the connection between the three works — deliberately open.
